Collections run as normal on Monday 31 August. Garden waste is free here, bulky waste is two free collections a year, and houses get sacks, not wheelie bins.

Wandsworth does not collect the way most of London does. Houses do not get a wheelie bin, and the council will not empty one. Rubbish goes in a dustbin or a tied sack, recycling goes in a clear sack, food goes in a brown caddy, and all of it goes out on the same day, every week.

Everything below comes from Wandsworth Council and was checked on 31 August 2026.

The quick answer

Nothing moves this bank holiday. The council’s own property checker lists Monday 31 August 2026 as the next collection day for a Monday round, and the council has published no notice of a change. Rubbish, recycling, food waste and small electricals all go out by 6.30am, or after 6.30pm the night before.

The things worth knowing beyond that: garden waste is free, there is no subscription, and you get two free bulky collections a year. Christmas is the only time the schedule really moves.

What goes in what

Key to the containers Wandsworth Council collects from the kerb, all weekly and all on the same day. Clear sack for paper, card, glass bottles and jars, tins, cans, foil, aerosols, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays and cartons. Dustbin or tied sack for general rubbish, with wheelie bins not collected and the council supplying neither the dustbin nor the rubbish sacks. Garden waste sacks, up to five bags in any strong sack beside the rubbish, no charge and no subscription. Large brown caddy for food waste including bones, peelings and plate scrapings. Small electricals left loose or in any bag alongside the sacks, with batteries and vapes banned from every container. Orange-lidded bank for communal recycling at flats, which do not get clear sacks.

The council runs a refuse sack service, not a bin service. Its page on how to leave your rubbish out is blunt about it: “we cannot collect rubbish from wheelie bins as they are designed for use with mechanical bin lifts”. It recommends a dustbin with a clip-on lid to keep foxes out. It supplies neither the dustbin nor the rubbish sacks.

Recycling sacks it does supply. You should get two rolls of 30 clear sacks delivered twice a year, in April and October. Run out and you can order more online, with delivery inside seven working days, or pick some up from any library or from the Customer Centre at the Town Hall, Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. Any clear sack works in the meantime. Black sacks, white bin liners and carrier bags do not.

The recycling rules changed on 31 March 2026 under the national Simpler Recycling reforms. Cartons and Tetra Paks, empty squeezy metal and plastic tubes, and metal biscuit tins are now all accepted in the clear sack. Still refused: soft plastics, crisp and biscuit wrappers, cling film, polystyrene, shredded paper, wallpaper and paper cups. The full list is on the what to put in your recycling page.

Large cardboard does not have to go in a sack. Break it into small pieces, tie it in a bundle and stand it beside the sacks.

Find your day, and see when the crew actually came

The council’s checker is at My Property. Enter a postcode, pick the address, and it does something most council lookups do not: it gives the next collection date for each stream and the time the last one was completed.

A Tooting address checked on 31 August showed the previous Monday’s rubbish completed at 10.45am and the food waste at 8.34am. That matters when you are deciding whether to report a missed collection, because the crew can be working until 4.30pm.

Bank holidays and Christmas

For the spring and summer bank holidays, Wandsworth collects as normal. There is no borough notice announcing a change for Monday 31 August 2026, and My Property lists that Monday as a live collection day for Monday rounds.

Christmas is different. In 2025-26 the council ran a revised schedule from 25 December to 3 January, and only the days that landed on a bank holiday moved. Its Christmas services page, archived on 8 December 2025, set out the whole thing:

Normal day Revised day
Thursday 25 December Friday 26 December
Friday 26 December Saturday 27 December
Monday 29 December No change
Tuesday 30 December No change
Wednesday 31 December No change
Thursday 1 January Friday 2 January
Friday 2 January Saturday 3 January

So Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday rounds were untouched, and the Thursday and Friday rounds slid by a day, into the Saturday. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, so a different set of rounds will be affected. The council has not published the 2026-27 dates yet, and this page will not guess them.

Christmas trees were collected free from Monday 5 January 2026, throughout the month, on the garden waste day for the street.

Garden waste is free, and that is unusual

Most London boroughs charge £50 to £75 a year for a garden waste bin. Wandsworth charges nothing. You can put out up to five bags of compostable garden waste each week, beside the dustbin, and they go with the rubbish. Any strong refuse sack will do, as long as it is tied and not split.

Two things will get it left behind, according to the garden waste page:

  • putting garden waste in council-branded clear recycling sacks
  • including bricks, soil, rubble or stones

More than five bags, or a bulky item like a tree stump, needs a booked collection or a trip to Smugglers Way. The council is also open that collected garden waste is incinerated for electricity rather than composted.

Bulky waste: two free collections a year

Every household gets two free bulky collections every 12 months. Each one covers up to four items, or 12 refuse sacks, because three sacks count as one item. Unused free collections do not carry over into the next year.

The charges once the free ones are gone, from the bulky item page:

Service Charge
Extra item added to a free collection £11.10
Standard collection, up to four items £24.90
Each additional item £11.10
Landlord collection, one to four items £106.70
Landlord collection, five to eight items £212.70
DIY waste, up to four items £106.70
Each additional DIY item £22.60
Each additional DIY sack £9.20

The DIY split is the trap. Anything that was ever fixed to the property counts as DIY waste, not household bulky waste, and costs more than four times as much: baths, bathroom units, built-in wardrobes, kitchen units and kitchen appliances. Book it under the wrong type and the crew will not take it, and there is no refund.

The council will not take American-style or side-by-side fridge freezers, range cookers such as AGAs, pianos or organs, soil and stones, or anything in a builder’s bag. To change or cancel a booking, call 020 8871 8558 by 4pm the working day before.

Wandsworth says the free service saves a household £48 a year and had passed 25,000 bookings by January 2026.

Mega Skip Days

Twice a month the council parks large skips around the borough and anyone living in Wandsworth can use them free. They open at 9am and close when full, or at noon, whichever comes first, so arriving late usually means arriving too late. Proof of address may be asked for.

The next dates and sites on the Mega Skip Days page:

  • 12 September: Stormont Road SW11 5EN, West Hill Road SW18 1LN, Wexford Road SW12 8NH, Welham Road SW17 7BU, Holmbush Road SW15 3LE, Putney Vale estate near 14 to 44 Frensham Drive SW15 3EB, Henry Prince estate at Haldane Place SW18 4UQ
  • 26 September: Acanthus Road SW11 5TY, Malva Close SW18, Larch Close SW12, Church Lane car park SW17 9PP, Putney Park Lane SW15 5HU, Battersea High Street at Lindsay Court SW11 3HZ, Alton estate east at Tildesley Road SW15 3AA

One warning about that second list. The council’s page gives Malva Close as SW18 5TY and Larch Close as SW12 2JU on 26 September, but on its 29 August list the same two sites are SW18 2JU and SW12 9SY. The postcodes have been shuffled, so navigate by street name rather than postcode.

The council credits the skips with cutting fly-tipping, though it has quoted two figures: 20 per cent on the Mega Skip Days page and 18 per cent in its January 2026 press release.

Missed collections: you have two working days

Report inside two working days, through the missed collection page. Before you do, the council asks you to confirm three things:

  • the waste was in the right place and container by 6.30am
  • the rest of the street has been collected
  • My Property shows the crew has attended your street

The lorries carry tracking technology, and the form will block a report if the crew has not been yet or if the collection was logged as a problem. If it was genuinely missed, the council returns within two working days. If it was not presented properly, it waits until your next collection day.

Leaving sacks or a dustbin on the public pavement, if you have a front garden or driveway, can bring a fine of up to £2,500.

The tip: Smugglers Way, and you have to book

There is one household waste and recycling centre in the borough, run by the Western Riverside Waste Authority on behalf of Wandsworth, Lambeth, Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea.

Household Waste and Recycling Centre, Smugglers Way, Wandsworth SW18 1JS

Day Hours
Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm
Saturday 8am to 6pm
Sunday 8am to 5pm

It is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Residents only, no commercial waste. If you arrive by car you have to book a slot through WRWA. There is a 2 metre height barrier, and vans, cars over 2m and cars with trailers are turned away: those have to use the Smugglers Way waste transfer station next door or Cringle Dock in Battersea, both of which need pre-booking and photo ID. You can walk or cycle in without a booking.

Rework, WRWA’s reuse workshop, is on the same site and takes furniture, bicycles, tools, toys and white goods in good cosmetic condition, working or not.

Flats, and flats above shops

Flats with large communal wheeled bins are not eligible for the clear sack service. They should have orange-lidded communal recycling containers instead, which take the same materials.

Since the week of 6 October 2025, flats above shops in the borough’s town centres have had rubbish and recycling collected twice a week rather than once.

Assisted collections

If nobody in the household can carry waste to the front edge of the property because of a disability, medical condition or mobility problem, the council will collect from your front doorstep. Long-term awards run for 36 months, then you get a reminder letter and have to contact the council to keep it going. Crews will not come inside a property. Households in blocks with communal bins are referred to their managing agent or landlord instead.
